Amayris Sandalwood Essential Oil

Amyris Essential Oil (Amyris balsamifera) is steam-distilled from the wood and branches of trees native to Haiti. Often referred to as West Indian sandalwood, it has a warm, woody aroma similar to true sandalwood, making it a popular and more affordable alternative. Due to its naturally high oil content, the wood burns readily like a candle, earning it the local nickname "candle wood."

Traditionally, amyris oil has been used to support wound care and to ease symptoms associated with colds, flu, and digestive discomfort. It is also believed to help soothe urinary and vaginal discomfort. In aromatherapy, its calming fragrance is commonly used to promote relaxation, reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, encourage restful sleep, and create a peaceful atmosphere for meditation. It is also valued as a natural muscle relaxant, skin-softening emollient, and is traditionally regarded as an aphrodisiac.

The tree was long mistaken for true sandalwood until botanical studies in 1886 identified it as a distinct species based on differences in its leaves. Today, Amyris balsamifera grows wild throughout Haiti and remains highly valued for its aromatic wood and essential oil. Throughout history, essential oils such as amyris were treasured for their fragrance and traditional therapeutic uses, and were often considered as valuable as gold.
